20mph speed limits for Belsize petition

Fellow Belsize Parkers

Belsize Park has for far too long had a problem with speeding vehicles in our lovely roads causing potential road accidents and unnecessary noise pollution, and this is something we would seriously like to address.

TfL casualty studies for 2009-10 show a 40% increase in cyclist casualties in Camden http://www.camdencyclists.org.uk/newsitems/ccc/cyclist-casualties-in-camden-2009-10 . However, currently Camden council are pushing back due to budgetary cuts and parking bays. 20mph speed limits also encourage cycling and walking, reduce carbon emissions by helping the flow of traffic and improve air quality.

Already 7m residents in the UK live in towns which are adopting or have adopted this policy. It is time that Belsize Park, Camden NW3 did too. (For more information see here: http://www.20splentyforus.org.uk/ )

Thus we urge all of you to please make a difference and sign our petition.

Mitzvah Day – 20 November 2011

Mitzvah Day is a Jewish led day of social action. On Mitzvah Day, around the world, thousands of people take part in hands on projects, without fundraising, to support charities and to build stronger communities.
Our mission is to reduce hardship and poverty, to help our environment and to bring a little joy – hands on – no fundraising. It is a way for all of us to make our mark regardless of our affiliation, wealth, age, sex or nationality.
Mitzvah Day is based on the Jewish values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedek (righteousness) and gemilut chassadim (acts of lovingkindness).
It is worth noting that while the projects on Mitzvah Day may be led by Jews, their beneficiaries are from all faiths and from none. Some are very local, many are national and international: Barnado’s, Marie Curie, Vision Aid to name but a handful.
The model is certainly catching: this year, for the second time, the Hindu community has created its own mirror of Mitzvah Day – National Sewa Day – meaning literally, selfless service, with the two events running in tandem.

Hampstead Theatre

Hampstead Theatre is the leading theatre for new artists to perform and engage the audience on a range of ethical, moral and political issues that affect us today.

Despite their artistic successes (notably Mike Leigh), Hampstead Theatre still faces financial challenges, especially in this tough funding climate. According to Edward Hall, the Artistic director, “Even though the theatre has been granted the majority of the alloted funding, we have still faced a cut of 11%.”

It is thus important for all of us to support this wonderful institution when we can, as the theatre strives to make world class productions to make us all proud.

Currently, the theatre is showing Loyalty which is a fictionalised memoir by Sarah Helm directed by Edward Hall, and is being shown from the 13 July till the 13 Aug 2011.
